Many of the issues that cause the boss to look at us less favourable could be avoided if we think before we speak or act.
Make sure you get any agreement with the boss in writing.
Remember bosses have to be friendly to encourage a good atmosphere but policies are there to be followed. Therefore before you tackle the boss make sure you are adhering to the policies of the company. If you haven't looked at it for a while get yourself a copy. Remember if you are going to tackle the boss about not being squeaky clean you need to be squeaky clean. The boss is likely to have plenty of recorded notes on you but chances are you have no or little record of conversations that you have had with the boss. Therefore it is important to record in writing conversations had between you and the boss over the particular issues you would like addressed. Personnel always like boss and employee to try their best to resolve the situation before it progress to greiviance procedures.
Remember if you wouldn't like personnel to know what you said to the boss then it's best not to say it because everything will be divulged to personnel in the case of a grievance. Don't be fooled by a boss who says it's off the record. There have been many cases where so called off the record conversations have led to dismissal of staff. So keep your unprofessional thoughts to yourself and share them with your friends.
